HIMSS AWARDS THOMSON MICROMEDEX-SPONSORED CLINICAL DECISION SUPPORT GUIDE 2005 "BOOK OF THE YEAR"

SAN DIEGO—Feb. 14, 2006—HIMSS MICROMEDEX BOOTH #3823—Thomson Micromedex proudly announces the visionary guidebook “Improving Outcomes with Clinical Decision Support: An Implementer’s Guide” as one of two recipients of the HIMSS 2005 ‘Book of the Year’ award.  Administered by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), the award honors books in the health information technology field that offers outstanding practical guidance or strategic insight for healthcare information and management professionals.

Micromedex, known as an industry thought leader in evidence-based clinical knowledge solutions, was pleased to sponsor the book’s funding and lead editorial authorship as a tool to help all healthcare delivery organizations improve outcomes. Micromedex is a part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC), a leader in enterprise-wide clinical knowledge solutions for scientific and healthcare professionals.

This ground-breaking guide helps healthcare organizations build a comprehensive and systematic approach to addressing key organizational goals through a clinical decision support (CDS) program. It provides practical, step-by step guidance for improving care processes and outcomes through CDS interventions.  These interventions--which consist of delivering knowledge to clinicians or patients--can measurably improve the quality, safety and cost-effectiveness of patient care when implemented properly, and this guide helps ensure success in this complex undertaking.

“There are strong synergies between the goals of the CDS Implementer’s Guide and those of Thomson Micromedex--improving outcomes by delivering the right knowledge to the right person in the right format at the right point in workflow,” said Jerry Osheroff, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.M.I., Micromedex chief clinical informatics officer, lead author of the CDS Guide, and chair of the HIMSS Clinical Decision Support Workgroup and Task Force. “I am grateful for the tremendous support from the Micromedex team in developing the Guide, and for their enthusiasm and talent in using the Guide as a framework for delivering high value Micromedex clinical knowledge solutions to healthcare organizations.”

The CDS Guide was first released on the Internet in 2004, then substantially enhanced and published as a book in 2005.  Other members of the HIMSS CDS Workgroup and Guide co-authors include such prestigious physicians leaders as:  Eric Pifer, M.D., Jonathan Teich, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.M.I., Dean Sittig, Ph.D., F.A.C.M.I., and Robert Jenders, M.D., M.S., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.M.I.

The award will be presented to these authors at the HIMSS conference awards banquet this evening.

“The CDS Implementer’s Guide is written by physician leaders and plays a vital role in helping healthcare organizations attain desired organizational objectives,” said Jay Katzen, vice president of marketing and product development at Thomson Micromedex. “Micromedex is committed to ongoing investment and leadership in advancing the success and value of clinical decision support in healthcare delivery.”

The 2005 edition of “Improving Outcomes with Clinical Decision Support: An Implementer’s Guide” can be purchased through the HIMSS online bookstore at http://www.himss.org/ASP/book.asp?ContentID=65044. The HIMSS member price is $55; the nonmember price is $68.
